Buckingham Town v Challow & Childrey

Oxford Times Cherwell Cricket League, Division One.

Andy Bone writes:
James Gear made a vital unbeaten 89 to help take Buckingham Town to a four-wicket success against Challow & Childrey in saturday's Oxford Times Cherwell Cricket League, Division One encounter.

Gear showed his experience after coming to the crease as Town slipped to another poor start and were 20 for 3.

Skipper Bryn Jones (40) supported well with a solid knock to help lift Town to the century mark before being caught.

Jeetan Patel looked in fine form before he was caught and, at 112 for 5, Town still had a lot of hard work to perform.

Thankfully, the dogged Gear played a well-timed innings and guided under 16s Skipper Shiv Talsania. The youngster's support was all the in-form Gear required at a vital stage of the game that Town needed to win.

Talsania (4) edged to the visiting wicketkeeper Mark Podbury and saw his team mate, under 15s captain Jonny Cater, come to the crease.

The pair proceeded to add a match-winning unbeaten partnership of 70 runs as Gear lead the way and saw Cater grow in confidence at the opposite end.

Town made it home in 47.4 overs with Gear's 89 not out coming in two and a half hours from 111 balls faced while Cater hit the winning runs as he finished with an excellent undefeated knock of 26 runs.

Nigel Hill finished with three for 53 for Challow & Childrey.

Earlier in the day, Vish Valambhia's opening burst bagged him three wickets while Paul Streater made Lumb steer the ball to Jason Ell as the visitors were left reeling at 26 for 4.

A fifth wicket stand of 145 helped take Challow & Childrey from that difficult position as Nick Watkins stroked a magnificent century and found Laurence Houghton (47) in excellent form.

Challow and Childrey then lost their last six wickets for just 26 runs as the posted 197 all out in 47.3 overs.

Vish Valambhia took four for 25, Patel, who continues to take wickets, finished with three for 79 and Ell chipped in with two for 57 for the home side.

The win takes Town out of the relegation places at the halfway stage of the season.

Challow & Childrey vs Buckingham Town 2nd XI

Nick Board writes:
Town 2nd X1 came close to recording a win away at Challow but lacked experience in the lower order to take the win. However, Challow were restricted to 83-3 at the half way stage with left armer Suresh Talsania causing the batsmen most of the problems. Ryan Spragg supported well at the other end although Challow increased the tempo during the second half scoring at six an over to reach 206 - 9 at the end of their innings. Talsania bowled unchanged, recording figures of 3- 75 from hid twenty five overs.

In reply, Town openers Taylor (41)and Arnull got off to a steady start but found the going tough against an accurate attack and slow wicket. Richard Pengelly (58)increased the tempo with a beligerent innings and put Town on the track to victory, supported by Talsania (21). However, needing just four runs per over, the innings fell apart as five wickets tumbled for thirteen runs. At the end of the innings,Town were just twenty runs short.

Oxford & Bletchingdon 4ths vs Buckingham Town Saturday 3rd XI

Bob Hutt writes:
Buckingham Town 3rds had a fine 9 wicket win over Oxford & Bletchingdon 4ths. The Oxon side elected to bat and against a tight opening bowling attack of Stuart Helps and Dominic Pritchard they struggled and scored slowly. After 37 overs they had only scored 98 runs but in the last nine overs they increased the tempo thanks to C.Smith(47) and closed on 164-7. Stuart Helps took 4-82 bowling throughout and Dominic Pritchard was very economical with 1-33 from 17 overs.

Buckingham made a splendid start with veterans Tim Archdeacon 85n.o. and Bob Hutt(47) who put on 137 for the first wicket and set up a comfortable nine wicket victory.
