Challow and Childrey 1st XI vs Buckingham Town 1st XI

Cherwell League Division 1

Andy Bone writes:
Jeetan Patel became the first Buckingham Town player for twenty years to take fifty Cherwell Cricket League wickets as his side finished the season with a draw at Challow and Childrey.

The former New Zealand 'A' spinner finished with four for 82 and became the first Town bowler to reach the half century mark since Ian Pont achieved 55 wickets in the 1984 season. Pont left Town for Essex the following year.

With no promotion or relegation issues riding on the outcome of the game, Town travelled to Oxfordshire with a young side which included the promising colts batsman Jamie Hirst in their line up.

Challow's openers Julian Penny and Glyn Lumb put on 176 runs for the first wicket before the spin duo of Patel and James Gear helped reduce the home side to close on 265 for 7 wickets.

In reply, Bryn Jones, who passed a late fitness test to play, finished off his fine season in style as he reached a 47-minute half century.

Gear (23) and Patel (43) both supported Jones before Town lost two quick wickets and re adjusted their aim to reach the maximum batting points total of 220 runs.

When Jones (76) was finally dismissed, he finished as Town's top run scorer with 472 for the season.

Hirst came in at number eight and produced an impressive shot selection on his debut. The youngster, who at 13, was part of a middle order that contained 16 year old Shiv Talsania and Jonny Cater.

Hirst finished unbeaten on 23 as Town closed on 226 for 6 from their 50 overs.

Buckingham Town 2nd XI vs Challow and Childrey 2nd XI

Cherwell League Division 4

Ed Jones writes:
Buckingham 2nds ended their inconsistent 2004 league campaign with a convivcing win over a weakened Challow & Childrey.

The Oxfordshire club could only field ten players, yet made the bizarre decision to bat first on winning the toss leaving Buckingham to chase a target against a reduced number of fielders.

Matthew Arnull and Ryan Spragg, two seasoned campaigners, bowled a tight line and the Challow batsmen, despite looking untroubled, found scoring difficult. In fact, it was only in the 47th of the 50 overs that the scoring rate reached four an over. This late acceleration was due mainly to a fine 3rd wicket partnership between Kennedy-McGregor and Penrose.

The latter went on to make 70 after an inauspicious start to his innings. Paul Sly finished with 2 for 59 off his 16 overs.

Skipper Ed Jones opened Buckingham's reply with Mike Taylor in a much changed batting line-up. The pair put on 49 in the first seven overs before Jones fell for a 29, which included a six that landed in Bourton Road. Taylor and Krishan Talsania continued the carnage, reaching 52 and 47 respectively in a superb stand of 81 in 14 overs.

Arnull and Richard Pengelly, one of the season's success stories, then all but saw in the win with a partnership of 77 off 12 overs before Arnull perished. Pengelly ended the match on 43 not out as Buckingham won by 6 wickets in the 36th over.
