Southgate vs Buckingham Town
ECB Cockspur Cup
Andy Bone writes:
Buckingham Town put up a brave fight on Sunday in their
inaugural Cockspur Cup game at Middlesex Premier League side
Southgate but went down to a six-wicket defeat.
Batting first, home grown products Dan Harris and Jonny Cater
batted very well against a side two leagues above their Cherwell
League status.
In the absence of the injured Bryn Jones, the pair shared a superb
129-run opening partnership with Harris reaching a 68-ball half
century in 86 minutes while Cater supported well with a valuable
knock.
Harris was stumped for an attacking 75 from 86 balls, but sadly
Town failed to build from the platform set and then proceeded to
lose six wickets for just 26 runs. Cater was amongst those
dismissed as he was run out for an excellent 45 runs from 95
balls.
Skipper James Gear (15) reached double figures before Jason Ell
chipped in at the end with an unbeaten 17 to help steer Town
through to 188 for 7 in 45 overs.
Opening bowler Vish Valambhia bowled brightly and was much
improved on the previous day's efforts as he removed openers
Stevens and Tohill. His nine overs saw him return with figures of
two for 32.
Skipper Jamie Jounning (68) and Hartman (50) then shared a stand
of 97 runs but were aided by two dropped catches which proved to
be vital before Matt Arnull and Gear castled both players.
Robinson and Dean saw Southgate home although it was a very
creditable performance by Town's young side.
