Great Horwood vs Buckingham Town 2nd XI

Andrew Holland writes:
For Buckingham Town 2nd XI, it was a new group of youngsters, with some familiar old faces, striding out for the first friendly of the 2007 season. Procedures began badly as new skipper Adam Izzard lost the toss, and Great Horwood were able to grab first use of the pitch. Captain Stuart Parker and Matthew McStraw set about building a solid start for the home side, but were also restricted by some accurate early bowling from youngsters Lawrence De Silva and Robin Pritchard. Scoring at less than 4 runs an over McStraw fell in the 11th over to a straight quick ball from De Silva to leave Great Horwood at 39-1. The scoring remained low, despite efforts from captain Parker, after the wicket, with Pritchard finishing a tidy 10 overs (0-36), and the first change bowler Andy Norman keeping up the pressure. However, Buckingham showed some start of season errors by flooring 2 or 3 simple chances, and so Great Horwood passed the half way mark with 9 wickets still in hand. Parker reached 50 and opened up with 4 quick boundaries before holing out to midwicket off the bowling of Norman for 68, and with Chapman (29) going 3 overs previous the hosts started the last 10 overs at 131-3. The entertainment was about to begin however as Steve Willett and Neil Hogston cut lose. A partnership of 62 off 42 balls followed, putting Buckingham on the back foot, and Hogston (31 off 23) only fell when he accidentally hit a passing car with a massive 6, and appeared to lose concentration. Fortunately, despite 2 broken windows, no one was hurt, and after a strong cup of tea in the pavilion, mother and daughter were both able to walk away unscathed. The last 27 balls of the innings then went for 42 runs however with the young pairing of O'Neil and Powell going for 79 off 10 overs, allowing Great Horwood to finish with 225-5 from 40 overs. Steve Willett finished with an unbeaten 58 from 42 balls including 4 big sixes.

In reply, Buckingham had the worst possible start with the new opening partnership of Mike Taylor and Robin Pritchard undertaking some poor running in just the second over to leave the experienced Taylor walking back to the pavilion for 2. Despite the next 4 batsman all getting in, no one was able to push on, and Buckingham found themselves 107-5, with the big wicket of Adam Izzard (28 off 27) falling in the process. The slower bowling of Ian Chapman seemed the key as he picked up 3-23 in 5 overs before heading off the field for another commitment. The game was lost from that moment though, as only Stuart Powell showed some fight with 19, while McStraw (10 overs, 2-34), Hogston (4 overs, 2-16) and Arnold (1.2 overs, 2-8), picked up the last five wickets in less than 8 overs, to leave Buckingham all out for a disappointing 138, and presenting Great Horwood with an 87 run win.

Taking nothing away from a very good all round performance from a dominant Great Horwood team, but a young Buckingham team showed lack of experience and possibly a misinterpretation of the conditions as they fell a long way short. It should be pointed out that at the start of the last 10 overs, Great Horwood's 131-3 played Buckingham's 130-8, and maybe Buckingham should have paid more attention to Great Horwood's pacing of an innings, and not worried about an increasing run rate, after all, in any form of cricket, wickets in hand will always allow you to catch up at the end.

Great Horwood won the toss.
