Buckingham Town 2nd XI v Oxford 3rd XI

Andrew Holland writes:
Buckingham cricket ground has rarely looked better than it did on Saturday afternoon, full credit to the grounds man. Buckingham had their familiar faces back, with the exception of captain Adam Izzard and all seemed to be well as Mike Taylor won the toss and put Oxford in. That decision seemed justified when after a quick start Ryan Spragg bowled Oxford captain Davies for 10 in the fifth over to leave the visitors 27-1. The aggression continued though as Oxford reached 44 from 7 overs. Graham Judd and Richard Pengelly built up some pressure though, and had it not been for several wides there would have been much more. Wickets failed to come though and slowly the partnership reached 50, then a 100, and still it continued. When the 30 over mark arrived Oxford found themselves 157-1, and in a position to open up. In the 32nd over Tim Marcon, the Oxford opening batsman reached a fantastic 100 off 112 balls, soon followed by the number 3 bat Chris Jackson reaching a 79 ball 50. After that Buckingham had no answer as they conceded 98 from the final 60 balls without a wicket, as Jackson reached 64 (88) and Marcon 157 (140).

In reply Buckingham always looked in with a chance however. Rarely did the innings run rate fall below 5, usually near the 5 and a half an over mark. It took 17 overs for captain Mike Taylor to finally be dismissed for 38, with the score 86-1. The next partnership kept up that rate, and after 24 overs Buckingham were 125-1, the rate climbing but with two batsmen in looking good. Then Urfaan Ahmed dismissed Pritchard 1st ball and the game changed. Thompson came and went quickly, but at the end of the 30th over Buckingham were 160-3, 3 more than Oxford at the same stage. The first ball of the last 10 brought a 4th wicket though as Tom Jones was run out for 18 off 15 balls and Buckingham began to feel the pressure. Graham Judd reached a 73 ball 50 though, and let loose. While 2 further wickets fell at the other end Judd scored his next 50 from 30 balls, but it was in vain as Buckingham fell to a 17 run defeat.

All in all it was a vast improvement on the previous week, but maybe some more pressure in the field, fewer wides and more than starts with the bat and Buckingham can feel that they are in for a good season.
