Buckingham Town 1st X1 vs Cumnor 1st XI

Andrew Holland  writes:

Town Second Despite Defeat

Having started the season unbeaten, Buckingham went into the match full of confidence, but met a Cumnor side fresh from a 146 run victory the week before. The Cumnor captain won the toss and chose to bat.

Things began badly for the visitors as the openers attacked the new ball and some lack of control saw some early wides, (14 in the first 5 overs!). One ray of hope was Greg Pearson taking a caught and bowled to make the score 28-1. James Nielson and New Zealander Andrew Robertson then carried on the good work. Both soon reached 50, and all the bowlers continued to spray the ball around.

Ben Stafford and James Gear's slower bowling limited the wides for a while and eventually Nielson was caught at long on for 54. A third wicket was taken with the score on 183, but Robertson remained, and so when the score was 204-3 with 10 overs to go, Cumnor looked set for a huge total. Robertson smashed his way to a 114 ball 100, but captain Geoff Walford was the star as he hit a 26 ball 50 before finishing 67 from 36 balls with 5 big sixes.

Despite some good overs under the circumstances from Dan Harris, Cumnor were able to declare with an over to go on 303-3.

Buckingham never got going in response. James and Leigh Tomlinson were both bowled in the first 7 overs and Jonny Cater soon followed. Hopes were raised slightly as Dan Harris smashed his way to 32 from 23 balls before chipping straight into the air. Two more wickets fell quickly and Buckingham were 97-6.

Captain Rob Large, having dropped down the order, offered some resistance with a very well made 47, but continued to lose partners and was adjudged caught behind in the 38th over to leave 10 and 11 Ben Stafford and Jason Ell 13 overs to survive. They both batted bravely as they slowly edged towards the draw, with Stafford putting two big sixes over the bowlers head. It all ended though when Stafford edged to slip for 25, 14 balls short of the draw.

Morris Motors 2nd X1 vs Buckingham Town 3rd X1

Bob Hutt writes:
For the second week running fielding lapses cost Buckingham Town 3rds dear as they lost to Morris Motors 2nds by one wicket.

Skipper Helps won the toss and batted on a surprisingly wet wicket. Town lost three cheap wickets but recovered with some excellent batting from Skipper Helps(26) and colt Callum Cater(19).

Then they collapsed to only 84 all out.

With such a small total to defend Helps gambled with spin at one end from the start and was rewarded with a fine spell from off spinner Andy Norman 6-41 from 17 overs. With Motors on 65-8 Town were favourites as Motors then went to 74-9.

However catches went down and a very good lbw appeal was turned down as Motors scraped home. Skipper Stuart Helps took 2-12 from his 10 overs. A disappointing result for the 3rds.
