Buckingham Town vs Great Tew
Andrew Holland writes:
Town back to the top after thrilling draw
When Buckingham arrived at Great Tew on Saturday the weather was
cloudy, but the rain was staying away, and a game looked like it
was on the cards. Great Tew won the toss and went for the
aggressive option of inserting the visitors. This was good news
for Buckingham who had to start with 10 men due to skipper Rob
Large being delayed. Buckingham made a bright start going at 5 an
over in the first 10 overs but unfortunately lost the wickets of
James Tomlinson and the out of form Jonny Cater. After that the
wickets dried up though. Leigh Tomlinson and Jimad Khan batted
well, never playing stupid shots but always keeping the scoreboard
ticking. When the 30 over mark was reached the score was 115-2 and
Great Tew were scratching their heads. Then Khan had a rush of
blood and lofted a ball down deep midwickets throat off the
bowling of youngster Jack Taylor for 41. Taylor got another wicket
in similar style a few overs later and the score stuttered. The
return of Aussie quick Anthony Smith changed things though as,
after a tight first spell, Leigh Tomlinson took his first over for
14, including a hooked 6. Tomlinson's 50 came up and with the last
10 approaching Buckingham were planning 230-250. Then Steve Murrey
had Tomlinson caught behind first ball for 71, and Buckingham
reached 40 overs at 156-5. 20 runs came off the next 5 overs with
Taylor claiming another wicket before Buckingham let loose. Rob
Large and Greg Pearson hit 40 in 4 overs before Taylor's last over
conceded just 2 with a run out and a catch off the last
ball. Buckingham ended 218-8.
In reply Steve Clayton made an aggressive start, hitting 18 off 21
before being clean bowled by Greg Pearson. After that scoring was
tough, as both Sam Catling and Justin Parker dug in. Pearson then
got Parker caught by debutant Tom Jones at mid off to bring
captain Shane Faulkner to wicket. His batting then increased the
rate, and Buckingham were on the back foot. At 30 overs they
reached 117-2, and Great Tew were looking comfortable. Catling's
long ordeal of 23 off 80 balls then came to an end when Ben
Stafford bowled him, before James Gear had the new batsman caught
at silly mid off and Khan ran out Faulkner. The score was then
123-5, and the pressure had switched. At the start of the last 10,
Great Tew were 151-5, almost identical to Buckingham. Gear took
another wicket and with 6 overs to go, Buckingham needed 4
wickets. Rob Large brought himself on, and his 3rd ball full toss
did the trick. Jack Taylor hit it straight to midwicket for 27,
and suddenly the win was on. The game took another turn though as
Steve Murrey hit 18 off 16 balls with 2 fours and a big 6. 19 off
12 balls was the stat when James Gear took two wickets in the 49th
over and Great Tew's victory looked finished. Rob Large bowled the
last over, but couldn't find the last wicket and the innings ended
on 213-9, a fantastic draw.
