Andrew Holland writes:
In overcast conditions Buckingham Town II won the toss and put
visitors Cumnor into bat. In the final friendly before the league
games Buckingham had a very strong team out, and after two defeats
wanted to gain some momentum going into the competitive division 4
of the Cherwell League. Openers Ian Belcher and Pete Burt came out
and despite some tight early bowling from Bryn Jones and Richard
Pengelly soon had the scoreboard moving, hitting a high majority
of boundaries. 54 came from the first 10 overs, and another 51 in
the second. At the half way point Cumnor where 105-0 and
Buckingham were starting to look flat. Then a spectacular tumbling
catch from Neville Pritchard ended Burt in full flow. He hit 53
off 63 balls with 48 off them in boundaries. Momentum then swung
to Buckingham as the new batsman, Malcolm Evans, took 13 balls to
get off the mark. Despite that however they still managed to reach
the last 10 overs at 160-1. Cumnor then looked set to lift
themselves to a big total before Evans was run out and Belcher was
clean bowled by Toby O'Neil for 95. One more wicket fell as Cumnor
ended on 233-4 in 40 overs.
Needing nearly 6 an over was always going to be tough, but the
Buckingham wickets were looking perfect for batting. Cumnor struck
early however as out of form Taylor was bowled for 4. Judd and
skipper Adam Izzard then rebuilt the innings adding 40 in 42 balls
before Judd fell to opening bowler Cox. Izzard then had a sudden
flurry of boundaries and was dropped before toe ending a half
volley to mid off for 47 (40). Buckingham lost one more wicket
before the last 10 overs, needing 88 from the last 60 balls with 6
wickets in hand. Robin Pritchard reached a 69 ball 50 and he
shared a run a ball stand of 75 with Russell Thompson. However,
when quick bowler Jeremy Douglas got Pritchard lbw for 63
Buckingham needed 48 from 5 overs. A rush of blood then did it for
Thompson as he was out reverse sweeping for 40 from 33 balls. 2
more wickets fell and Buckingham needed 15 from the last
over. Ryan Spragg then hit 2, 2, 2, 4, 2 to leave 3 from the last
ball, which he smashed over backward square leg for 4.
