Thatcham Town vs Buckingham Town
Andrew Holland writes:
Weakened Town secure draw
In wet and overcast conditions
Buckingham lost the toss and were inserted. Openers Rob Large and
Leigh Tomlinson got the visitors off to a steady start and against
the opening seamers, Large looking in good touch as he recorded
his 50 from 51 balls. When the spinners came overs began to
disappear as the over rate leapt up. With the score on 84 the
first wicket fell as Tomlinson was run out for 21. Jonny Cater
joined his skipper and between them the score passed 100 and by
the lunch had moved on to 131-1 from an incredible 41 overs.
With 19 overs left after lunch Buckingham put their foot on the
gas as they added 49 in 6 overs. Large passed 100 and Cater 50
before Large was caught for 101. Dewayne Bowden went for 12 and
with 10 overs to go the score was 199-3. Dan Harris came to the
wicket and with Cater added 45 from 38 balls. Cater scored 73 from
79 balls before Harris was stumped for 43 from 35. With 1 over to
go the score was 271-5 before one of the most extraordinary overs
ever seen. The first ball saw a run out before opening bowler Ali
Navqi removed 3 batsmen 1st ball for his hat-trick. Fifth ball was
a quick single before the last ball had the 3rd run out of the
innings. 5 wickets had fallen for 1 run in the 60th over so that
Buckingham ended 272 all out.
After a brief rain delay Greg Pearson took a wicket in the 4th
over to give the visitors the start they wanted. That was the only
success before rain brought about early tea as Thatcham moved to
60-1 from 13 overs.
In an attempt to get the over rate above the required 17 an hour
part-time bowlers Dan Harris and Rob Large were bowled in
tandem. Little success came through this strategy as Jim Ettridge
and Steve Wyatt didn't allow the run rate to fall below 5. Harris
did claim the wicket of Wyatt for 44 (42 balls) but after 30 overs
the score was 151-2 and Thatcham were looking at the victory
target of 273. Ettridge passed 50 as the return of openers Pearson
and Bowden didn't slow the run rate. Navqi fell for 39 and
wicket-keeper Stone made 33 from 27 balls. When Bowden removed
Stone Thatcham still needed 58 runs with less than half an hour
left before 7. 2 more wickets fell before the end including an
excellent catch on the boundary with Leigh Tomlinson alert enough
to pass the ball to Chris Wigan as he went over the rope. Thatcham
finished 249-6 from 47 overs.
