Basingstoke & North Hampshire vs Buckingham Town

Andrew Holland writes:

Long day ends in disappointment!

After a win and a draw in their previous 2 games, Buckingham had confidence on their trip down to Hampshire. They won the toss, and inserted Basingstoke. Things got off to a bad start though as openers Russell Droy and Kevin Latouf played aggressively, dealing mainly in boundaries. For the first time in several games the opening combination of Dewayne Bowden and Greg Pearson didn't make early breakthroughs. Runs came at 5 an over as 80 were put on in 16 overs. Jason Ell brought the visitors back into the game with wickets in consecutive overs as Droy was bowled for 37 before captain Mitchell Stokes was well stumped by Jonny Cater. Latouf continued strongly bringing up his 50 from 57 balls but was stopped in his tracks when Leo Churms had him lbw in his first over. 2 overs later a good catch from Stephen Lewis claimed Basingstoke's 4th wicket with their 5th falling just before lunch. The session finished with a silly run leading to a run out so that the home side were 145-6 at lunch.

After lunch nothing seemed to go right for Buckingham. The batsmen Ben Foxley and Kumaran Thirun scored at over 4 runs an over and didn't look in too much trouble. None of the bowlers could find a breakthrough and thoughts of keeping the hosts below 200 were soon gone. As the last 10 overs arrived Indian Thirun started to open his shoulders. Both batsmen passed 50 with Thirun reaching 75 from 76 balls before Foxley was stumped off James Gear for 58 prompting a declaration with the score 283-7 from 57.3 overs.

Like with the ball nothing went right with the bat as Rob Large was caught at slip off Stokes in the second over prompting a collapse. Only Leigh Tomlinson managed to reach double figures out of the top 7 making 25 in over an hour of solid batting as Stokes took 4 wickets. At tea the score was 69-7 and a home win looked odds on.

While James Gear (18) and Stephen Lewis (15) avoided the threat of the lowest total ever made by Buckingham in the Home Counties League and managed an extra point by bringing up the 100 the result was never in doubt with Buckingham all out for 111.
